Ayurveda, translated quite literally as "the science of life," has survived 5,000 years to teach us how be attuned with our bodies constitutions in order to be in closer harmony with the cycles of nature. Traditionally, Ayurveda uses all of the senses to bring balance through food, herbal formulation, physical movement, breathing techniques, as well as other more esoteric modalities of achieving balance. Those will be approached if/when the patient is ready.
Disease is defined as the natural end result of living out of harmony with one’s constitution. Over time we become imbalanced through choices, lifestyle choices, and emotional stress. Because we all have a different balance of energy, Ayurveda shows that the path to optimal health is different for each person depending upon their constitution. This is determined through intensive intake and then looking at an individuals "doshic makeup". The DOSHAS are the energetic elements which present themselves in our bodies in varying degrees and relate to the 5 elements in nature -Ether, Air, Fire, Water,Earth. EACH PERSON HAS A TOTALLY UNIQUE MAKEUP OF THESE QUALITIES. In Ayurvedic terms each corresponds as follows: VATA- Ether + Air PITTA- Fire + Water KAPHA- Water + Earth
The aim of Ayurveda is to eliminate the underlying cause of the disease, and not to simply relieve symptoms. By integrating Ayurveda into daily life, healing takes place on a deeper level which creates a balance in the whole body, mind, and spirit.
